The renowned Islamic scholar and one of the caliphs of Sheikh Ibrahim Inyass, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, passed away on Thursday morning.
Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi was an Islamic scholar and a major figure in the Tijjaniyya order in Africa. He was also the vice chairman of the supreme council of scholars responsible for issuing Islamic legal opinions (fatwas) in Nigeria.
In a 2019 interview he granted to Armstrong Bakam, a journalist with The Punch, Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi revealed some details about his life.
While answering a question about how he became a prominent Tijjaniya scholar, Sheikh Bauchi explained:
"I am a Fulani man born on June 28, 1927, in the town of Nafada (now in Gombe State), but I am originally from the town of Kwankiyel in Darazo Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
I received all my Islamic education under the supervision of my father, through whom I memorized the Qur’an, and it was also through him that I received the Tijjaniyya order. My father received the Tijjaniyya order from a man named Alhaji Gwani Abba.
Later, my father gave me permission to travel anywhere I desired to deepen my knowledge of Islam and the memorization of the Holy Qur’an.”
The scholar became a master of Tafsir (Qur’anic exegesis), earning numerous awards in this field. He also received honorary degrees from various institutions in Nigeria and around the world. Just last year, a foundation honored him with an award, and the Federal University in Lafia, Nasarawa State, also bestowed upon him a major honorary recognition.
Here are some of the achievements of Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi over the decades:
He converted thousands of people to Islam through his teachings.
He continuously recited the Qur’an and would complete the entire Qur’an in just two days.
He bestowed the Tijjaniyya litanies (Lazim) upon thousands across the world.
More than 40,924 students memorized the Holy Qur’an in his schools across Nigeria.
He established 383 Qur’anic memorization schools in Nigeria and other parts of Africa.
Through his foundation, 33,060 study rooms were built across Northern Nigeria.
Allah blessed him with around 76 children who are all Qur’an memorizers, as well as about 200 grandchildren who are also memorizers, and over 15 great-grandchildren — all memorizers of the Holy Qur’an.
He graduated more than 50,400 Qur’an memorizers from his schools, along with about 90,500 students currently seeking to memorize the Qur’an.
Sheikh Dahiru passed away leaving behind four wives, many children, numerous grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
May Allah have mercy on his soul.
